By Matt Wickstrom
LEXINGTON, Ky. — This week on Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio host Matt Wickstrom was joined by Gideon Maki of indie rock outfit Lylak and soulful, Paintsville-based singer-songwriter Sean Whiting.
First on the program was Gideon Maki (0:00–1:02:12) to discuss his musical roots, Lylak’s origins, recording experiences, projects on the horizon and much more. Maki also performed stripped-down versions of “Gabriel” and “Start Again,” two tracks on the band’s 2017 self-titled EP along with a sampling of the album versions of the EP’s other two tracks “Someone Who Cares” and “Virginia.”
Following Maki was Sean Whiting (1:02:13–2:02:18) to discuss musical comparisons between himself and Chris Stapleton along with stories from when the two were growing up in the Paintsville area together; the transition into pursuing music as a full-time career, songwriting, his upcoming sophomore album and much more. Whiting also performed two songs live — “Harvest the Moon” off his upcoming record and “Hey There” off of 2017’s Finally… The Beginning.
