Tune in on Monday, March 18 from 9-11 a.m. for episode 60 of Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio. I’ll be joined by psych rockers Sweet Country Meet Boys ahead of the release show for their new album “I am the Thief, You are the Medium” on March 23 at The Burl and Jonathan New ahead of his show with Rachel Crowe on March 20 at The Twisted Cork. Tune in on the dial at 93.9 FM-WLXU or online at LexingtonCommunityRadio.org.
An eclectic assortment of local acts led by bluegrassers Restless Leg String Band and the genre-bending Brother Smith will converge on The Burl for a countdown to year three of Tahlsound Music Festival with a St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 17. Music will kick off immediately following the final buzzer of the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament final between Auburn and Tennessee (roughly at 3 p.m.) for the all ages (prior to 7 p.m.) event (18+ after 7 p.m.). Other bands performing include sea shanty outfit Drunk & Sailor, danceable cajun-infused group Double Dog Swamp Band and the folksy One Lane Bridge.
The Troubadour Concert Series will present chicano rock all stars Los Lonely Boys on March 20 at the Lyric Theatre. Hailing from San Angelo, Texas, Los Lonely Boys are a sibling trio whose music draws equally from rock, blues, Tex-Mex, conjunto, and tejano. Such a combination is shaped by the band’s three brothers – guitarist Henry Garza, bassist JoJo Garza, and drummer Ringo Garza, Jr. Formed in 1996, the band is best known for their debut single “Heaven,” which reached the no. 1 spot on Billboard’s adult contemporary chart and reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004. Wednesday’s show begins at 7:30 p.m.
Lexington-based psych rock outfit Sweet Country Meat Boys will celebrate the release of their sophomore album “I Am The Thief, You Are The Medium” with a celebratory show at The Burl on March 23 with support from Dad Shorts and Pleasure Boys. Comprised of guitarist Aaron Todd, bassist Alex Parkansky and drummer Jonathan Modaff, the band features a trippy instrumental power trio aesthetic accompanied live by the mind-altering visuals of Travis Hall.
Learn more about the band’s trippy sound and visuals, the new album, release show and more when they join me for Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio March 18. However, the experience is one better seen than just heard, so don’t miss them when they light up The Burl stage on Saturday at 9 p.m.
The highly acclaimed jazz fusion group Jazz is PHSH comes to Cosmic Charlie’s on March 23. The project is the brain child of drummer and band leader, Adam Chase. With the help of musicians that have ranged from the great Dennis Chambers and Jeff Coffin of Dave Matthews Band and The Flecktones to the late, great Kofi Burbridge of Tedeschi Trucks Band and Sun Ra’s Michael Ray, Chase has built a collective of musicians that have shined a light to jazz fans just how deep Phish’s compositions are while showing Phish fans just how much can be done with their favorite songs.
For their spring tour Jazz Is PHSH will feature a rotating cast of musicians that range from the three-time Grammy Winning Saxophonist Chris Bullock of Snarky Puppy to French teenage piano prodigy DOMi Degalle, who has only been in the states for a few years and has already collaborated with Thundercat, MonoNeon, the late Mac Miller, Ghost Note and legendary drummer Mike Mitchell, among many others. Saturday’s show kicks off at 9 p.m.
Breckinridge County’s Jericho Woods bring their upbeat, made for radio country and southern rock sound to one of the area’s most iconic music venues, Austin City Saloon, on March 23. The group, led by guitarist Josh Mitcham and bassist Paul Priest, is currently putting the final touches on their latest album, which was recorded at Nashville’s OMNIsound Studios and will be available on May 3. Saturday’s show begins at 10 p.m.
