Railbird Fest releases daily schedules

By Matt Wickstrom

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Start making your plans for the upcoming Railbird Festival at Keeneland. The festival today announced the daily schedules for its inaugural gathering, to be held on Aug. 10 and 11 on the grounds of Keeneland.

The festival kicks off on Aug. 10 with Brit pop’s Lucie Silvas before a stretch of funk, rock and soul from locals Joslyn & The Sweet Compression, The Dip and Devon GilFillian, the later of which just performed in town last week as part of a Railbird pre-party at The Burl.

Following GilFillian will be the artist who joined him at that pre-party, Ian Noe, followed by sweaty rock ‘n rollers Low Cut Connie and Mavis Staples before hitting a stretch of rootsy performances with Justin Wells, Robert Earl Keen, Lillie Mae and Mandolin Orange.

Grace Vanderwaal and fiery guitarist Billy Strings both begin sets at 6:30 p.m. with the music kicking in to overdrive afterward with performances from Brandi Carlile, Ruston Kelly, Old Crow Medicine Show and The Raconteurs closing out day one.

Day two of Railbird begins at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 with Yola, an artist mixing together country and soul sounds that have earned her considerable praise including three nominations at the upcoming Americana Music Awards for Emerging Act of the Year and Album of the Year for 2019’s Through the Fire produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach.

Yola is followed by West Virginia rock outfit Ona, who much like Yola put out a fantastic new album, Summer Candy at the start of May. After Ona is Futurebirds, Susto and Monkey’s Eyebrow, Ky. native Kelsey Waldon, who just last week became the most recent artist and first in 15 years to sign to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records.

Waldon is followed by British songbird Jade Bird and female folk trio I’m With Her, comprised of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan. After them will be local garage rockers Johnny Conqueroo, the rootsy and subdued Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, Fruit Bats and soulful swing rockers St. Paul & The Broken Bones.

Following St. Paul are local favorites The Wooks before the evening escalates with sets from Lucinda Williams, Gary Clark Jr., Nashville rockers Blackfoot Gypsies and Eastern Kentucky superstar Tyler Childers before Hozier, combining influences of rock, soul, blues and pop, closes the evening and the festival out.
