LEXINGTON, Ky. — Earlier this week members of local doom/sludge rock group Forrest and Jessica Crockett of the Master Musicians Festival joined me for episode 75 of Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio.
The show began with Riley Logan (guitar) and Josh Summerville (drums) of Forrest ahead of the release of their sophomore EP Final Frontier on July 17 at The Burl. We discussed everything from each of the member’s musical roots to influences, artwork and how the EP came together in addition to listening to “DAN” from the band’s 2018 Kickball with Russians EP and “Bubba,” “Vacation (Don’t Even Come Back)” and “The Intensity of Frenchness” from Final Frontier.
During hour two Jessica Crockett, vice president of the Master Musicians Festival, joined me to preview this year’s 26th annual gathering in Somerset on July 19 and 20. We dived head-first into analyzing this year’s artist lineup headlined by Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, The War and Treaty and Lost Dog String Band that also features a well-rounded local lineup led by Senora May, The Josephines and Chelsea and Josh Nolan. Additionally, we looked at this year’s collaboration between West Sixth Brewing and Jarfly Brewing Company — “Swoller You Up” — along with changes to this year’s festival led by a new performance area — the SomerSessions tent — featuring live-streamed shows and a city provided water station to better withstand the summer heat. Mixed among conversation were songs from festival performers Jason Isbell, Nicholas Jamerson, Mama Said String Band and The War and Treaty.
